I am indeed privileged to welcome
you all to the webpage of North Malaysia Malayali Samajam (NMMS),
the oldest registered Malayali association of Malaysia.
NMMS was formed in 1951, then known as North Peninsular Malaysia
Kerala Samajam, to cater to the welfare, educational, cultural and
social needs of the Malayalis residing in North Malaysian states of
Perlis, Kedah, Northern Perak and Penang.
From a very humble beginning in 1951, today, the NMMS has grown to
be one of the most active Indian organizations in the country having
more than 1000 members. Sincere thanks to the members for their
continuous support and the determination and untiring
services rendered by the past leaders of our community.
Our contributions to the Malaysian society are recognized not only
by the Malayalees but also by the state and
federal leaders.
Our Samajam celebrates all major festivals of Malayalees, namely,
Vishu, Easter, Awal Muharam, Idil Fitri, Christmas and the grand
celebration being Onam, the harvest festival of Malayalees of all
walks of life.
To foster the true Malaysian spirit of nationalism, peace and
tolerance among members of various religious
backgrounds, our Samajam, for the past 40 over years is
celebrating Onam together with the Malaysian National day on 31st
August. In addition to the social gatherings and charitable
projects, we conduct Malayalam classes for
members and children in various areas such as Alor Star, Bedong, Sg
Petani, Kulim, Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam
and Penang Island to preserve the Malayalam language in this
country.
NMMS is an affiliate of All Malaysia Malayali Association (AMMA) –
the umbrella body of all Malayali associations in Malaysia. Our
Samajam is also actively involved in the Penang State Indian
Cultural Co-ordinating Committee, Penang
Amateur Athletics Association and the Penang State Consultative
Goodwill Committee.
At present our Samajam has undertaken three major projects to
upgrade the existing buildings and to create better environment for
the members and well-wishers to gather and interact. They are:
1. Restoration of the exiting
Samajam Building at 213, Jln
Masjid Negeri Penang which is classified
as a heritage
property.
2. Buiding of a Hall
behind the existing building at 213, Jln
Masjid Negeri, Penang.
3. Renovation work for the Samajam
House at Taman Bunga
Raya Sg.Petani.
Total cost for the above projects,
are estimated in the region of RM 1.Million and after going through
many options the management committee decided to hold a grand
Lottery Draw under the distinguished patronage
of Penang State Executive Councilor YB PK.Subbaiyah. The draw
will be officially launched by the
Honorable Chief Minister of Penang YAB Tan Sri Dr.Koh Tsu Koon on
the 22nd of May 2005 at 4.00 pm at the Dewan Barkath, 21 Beach
Street, Penang. I am very confident that all members and
well-wishers of our Samajam will come forward and support us
for the successful completion of the projects.
I sincerely hope that this Webpage of NMMS will provide most of the
information needed not only to our members but also to all
Malaysians and well-wishers residing all over the world. Time to
time we will update you with latest happenings of our Samajam and at
the same time we will be glad to receive your suggestions and ideas
for further improvements.
Thank you for your visit and happy browsing.
